Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last set of permanent teeth to erupt—usually appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. While some individuals experience zero issues, many people simply do not have enough room in their jaw for these teeth to emerge properly. This can lead to impaction, severe pain, and deep infections.

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Need Attention

If your third molars are struggling to emerge or are growing at an incorrect angle, you may experience one or more of the following warning signs:

Persistent Jaw Pain

A dull, throbbing ache or stiffness near the back of your jaw.

Tender or Bleeding Gums

Redness, swelling, or localized bleeding around the erupting tooth site.

Sinus Discomfort

Pressure, congestion, or pain in your nasal passages as upper wisdom teeth grow and shift.

Chronic Bad Breath

An unpleasant taste or odor caused by food trapped behind partially erupted teeth that are impossible to clean properly.

Difficulty Chewing

Discomfort or an altered bite when trying to open wide or consume food.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Extracted?

Leaving problematic wisdom teeth untreated can cause a chain reaction of oral health complications. We generally recommend extraction to treat or prevent:

Impacted Teeth: Teeth that remain completely trapped beneath the gum line or jawbone, occasionally developing painful fluid-filled cysts.
Pericoronitis (Gum Infection): Bacteria gathering under the flap of a partially erupted tooth, resulting in severe local swelling and limited jaw movement.
Tooth Decay & Cavities: Because these molars are located so far back, they are highly challenging to floss and brush, making them and neighboring teeth highly susceptible to deep decay.
